So, since you say that you don't really care about the ring, you just care about the feelings and the promise behind the ring, then you need to be able to be open with him. That's the most important thing in the relationship. Communication.

Tell him how you feel about him. If you're scared to say it, write it down. I always write how I'm feeling if it's too much for me to just tell my boyfriend. And he reads it, and we go from there. It's also very therapeutic. Good luck.
