* current Kalymnos in-joke
Rather than infuriate Mr Hornet in waving it away only for it to get annoyed, I let it tear off a strip of my steak and then return to its nest. It's about the best thing to do, especially after the kind of day I've had. |

But if I talked, it'd zip away. |

I did eat the steak. All. But hornets are never dirty insects for they only eat fresh apart from sugary things. In my 18 years living on Kalymnos I've never been stung by one except a bumblebee.
You should see their nests, they are amazing. When there's just a pair they'll set off to make a small disc-like nest of only about 3 inches diameter. This pair are what we know as shut outs. Some hornets get shut out of the main nest and have to fend for their own. But the bigger more established nests are way up in the mountains where only climbers get the benefit of. Heh. Like a huge 'citidal' that's located behind The Climber's Nest shop in Massouri. It's about 500 feet up, residing about 250,000 hornets in one of the mountain's massive caves. An old lady said they have been there for as long as she remembers.
I quite like hornets. Only time they'll get buggerational is after eating fallen fruit like figs whose season has just finished. Then there'll get horribly drunk - and I can tell by their sound when to get out of their way! |
