These devices will save your computer's CPU from power spikes, lightning strikes that will fry your modem and safeguard your computer.
See: Uninterruptible power supply - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There are frequent power cuts and outages in Kalymnos which is why I bought one. They vay in price but have come down way lower in price.

I've wanted one for a while, but frankly I have no need for it. I only want it because I'm a nerd.

A computer can't be that important that it must be on whilst everything is off, unless you require to run a web server that is critical to remain online. In that case fair enough. Better off spending money on a generator to power the mains in the house then just the computer in case of power outage. After just looking at that wiki page those UPS' have stuff all life :P I've worked around several hundred amp UPS' in the Australian Tax Office, and Several phone exchanges, Pretty cool seeing the sheer size.
Best option, Purchase a laptop ^_^
