America for Dummies

The America you see in Hollywood, with all those aliens, gadget and good looking girls isn't the real America as it looks to an outsider (underdeveloped countries excluded) who visits the country. Aliens don't exist, the gadgets are mostly 'Made in China' and the girls are usually imported from countries which have less fat and more good looking people (for example, the entire lead cast of a hit movie, Harry Potter is British).

Here is a For Dummies guide I have complied from a personal first hand experience for anyone wishing to know about the country. It will be updated as and when I have time, on a post by post basis.

Disclaimer:
If you are an American and never seen the world outside continental US, you might find this guide irksome. But it is to be expected, unless you have something to compare with you cannot make a comparison. A nation of ugly people who have not seen good looking people wouldn't know what 'beautiful' is.

Food and Cuisines

  • If you visit America from Europe or the well-off Asian countries, be prepared for tasteless food. Wine tastes like turpentine, juices taste like the container can, tea and coffee more like boiled ditch water, bread tastes like half baked pita and chocolate like boiled sugar. Maybe Americans are just bad at making food or maybe they lost their sense of taste.
  • If you try a 'foreign' restaurant in America be prepared to find an 'Amzericanised' menu. If you are a Greek and visit a Greek restaurant, you'll find the menu has a lot of stuff never heard of in Greece and nothing there tastes like the actual Greek food. Same applies for Italaian, Thai or any other cuisine in America.
  • American version of lunch is generally a quick dash to a fast food outlet for a wholesome diet of hamburgers, chips, fries and cola and all other kinds of industrial waste. This has contributed to a nation of 74% fat people putting a need to raise the standard of obesity. The 'normal weight' for United States will be about the same as 'over weight' for Europe, in practical considerations.

Next update - People and Culture

Uhm, I don't know where you've been, but maybe you need to shop for once?
  • Wine depends on where you get it from.
  • Juice depends on the brand/where you get it from.
  • Tea depends on where you get it from. Have you noticed that there are a million green teas named specifically on where they come from? It's because teas taste different depending on by who and where they are grown.
  • Are you eating sliced bread? Sliced bread is horrible. Try a fresh-baked loaf.
  • Chocolate is based, once again, on the brand and where you get it.

Are you trolling your own forum?

Again, where are you going to get this stuff? It depends on where you're going.

Not really. O_o

Sorry, I know you seem to have a lot of misconceptions about America, but McDonalds isn't the only restaurant around.

It's all okay though... I still find you sexy.

I did, which is why there is a guide as this.

Doesn't change. Every American wine is tasteless, expecially if one is used to champagne, scotch, vodka and other European spirits.

There was this Five Alive drink given to us in a chartered plane. Tasted like the can and I lost my appetite for juice quite sometime after that. The label says it was manufactured in US. There is another one - Fuze, equally bad, tastes like glucose infusion than a juice drink.

The United States is not known for its tea fields so you don't have to act silly. Try the tea anywhere in US, from homes to airports - tastes almost the same, much like machine tea. Even Starbucks is crap for coffee and tea, my friends can make better Cappucino using simple cooking utensils than they can with their mass production machines.

Tried everything. Loaf, bagels, sliced bread, buns...taste bad. Apparently they make them tasteless due to Jews who don't like the bread leavened with pork larder.

Perhaps Hershey, one of the most popular US brand of chocolates. Tastes more like sugar toffees. Tell me any chocolate brand of US which can match a Aero Caramel, Mars or Kit Kat bar.

Pretty much everywhere. West coast to east coast, most of the Italian, French, Greek or Thai restaurants are manned by American staff and serve only Americanised versions of food. And yes a lot of the things is the menu are such that a real Greek and Italian has never heard of and neither do they actually exist in Greece or Italy. Especially one restaurant close to the Denver airport which claimed to serve the best 'ethnic' cuisine.

McDonalds isn't the only one. There are Burgher King, Subway, et. el. including non branded fast food stores, expecially on NY, LA and Chicago.

Again, just because you have two energy drinks you don't like doesn't mean every juice in America tastes bad. (In America we have a distinction between a juice drink & an energy frink)

Of course we aren't known for our tea fields, most of our tea comes from other countries.

Don't eat much chocolate, so can't really say anything to this one.

You have not eaten at every 'ethnic' eating establishment in America. There are plenty of places owned & operated by people from whatever country they are making food from, don't say every place in America has bad ethnic food, because you have obviously never been to every one, or even most of them, & apparently not to one of the Italian places owned & run by Italians, or Asian places run by Asians, etc.

Okay. I don't drink alcohol so I don't know nor care.

Food doesn't taste good on a plane in the first place.

Eh, I prefer Odwalla anyway.

  • Erm, US isn't a much of a tea country; we actually aren't that big on tea. You want good tea? Go to Asia or England. As for tasting the same, no, sorry.
  • Starbucks is the McDonalds of coffee and is located in more countries than just the US. It's made by mass to meet demand for cheap prices, so I have no idea what you were expecting.

O_o I feel bad for wherever you go then.

The fresh, hot bread (especially home made) around here is great. Especially sour dough.

See message about mass production for demand of cheap prices. Want some real chocolate? Have you tried Dove? And there's another brand I can't recall the name of right now.

A troll is someone who says things for the sole purpose of causing conflict. Usually these things are inappropriate or very far out of the norm.

All owned by the same company.

None of which or actually that good for you.

There are not-so-famous fast food places everywhere that are actually very good and aren't all processed food.

What are you gonna make next? Australia for Dummies?

One doesn't have to sip every wine to find a good one in most parts of Europe. If one has to sip every wine in America to find a good one, it is obvious which region is better at wines.

It says Fresh Lime Juice in the can, if you claim they don't mean it then I consider it as fraud. And then there is always the Cranberry juice....

If the same tea tastes better when prepared by a Russian, German, Italian or someone else and tastes crap when made by Americans, it is pretty obvious who makes better tea.

Okay let me rephase it. I have tried every bread I came across in America.

Again, do I have to sample everything to find that one elusive good one? When Americans have breakfast, do they go hunting the entire United States for that good tasting bread? Makes me happy that I am not there, I can pick off a random bread anywhere here and it still tastes good and freshly baked.

If Jews or Muslims want bread, they can have it at their own outlets, we don't have to make spoil everyone's taste by making everything kosher or halal.

I can understand why. If I were in America I'd lose all appetite for those soft sugar toffees they call chocolates.

I don't think we taste food by 'glancing around'. Is that how Americans judge food? No wonder they are so tasteless, the sense of taste is in the tongue and nose, not in the eyes.

Neither do I, except on rare social occasions. Which is why I can quickly spot bad one, I am not that desperate that anything will do.
