Social grouping and conforming

Well I'd like to have a discussion about social groups. Now I live on the UK and we have quite a few such as chav, greebo, emo, indie etc. and lots of people try to conform to these "styles". If people aren't one "style" they may get claled by that social group the opposite and people like to put people in groups for them. I'm guessing its the same with the teenage populations all over the world. What I want to know is your opinion on this, what do you think this does to society? What do you think this does to individuals? and so on.

I think its a terrible thing for society and individuals. I think by grouping people up you aren't letting people express themselves properly. I don't associate myself with a group and nor do my friends but others like to try and tell us who we are and how we should be behaving because of their shallow judgement of us. I don't like how someone or society tries to restrict my creativity, or just restrict myself to certain images, certain styles of music and even certain friends. I'd like to make that decision up for myself thank you. I have a varied music taste, I like lots of different clothes and wear what I like on the day and I have friends that could be classed as many groups. I just don't like people putting people down and controlling everything, and threw peer pressure these groups cause social division and its not right in my book.

I think these groups are not as bad as you make them to be. Most people want to feel a sense of belonging, and want some close friends. These wants naturally cause groups to form.
It's the same thing as you not going out to every forum on the internet and talking to people, you probably have a handful that you like and you stick to them. It is more comfortable around the people you know and you get the sense of belonging. Nothing wrong with that I don't think.

Wink Re: Social grouping and conforming

Many mixed feelings, from alot of people on this topic.
Social groups are the result of people needing to feel acceptance from others. Just because you don't, dosn't mean the majority is the same way. That's life, just a few people can't change it...my best advice...deal.
