If someone is under 21 (or 18) and they claim to be "straight edge" (people who abstain from tobacco smoking, alcohol drinking, recreational drug use) then they're just being totally bogus right? Because technically, they are just following the law by not smoking cigs (under 18), drinking alcohol (under 21), or doing drugs (illegal for all ages).

Some "sxe" people could also abstain from promiscuous sex, caffiene, and go vegetarian or vegan. Those have no age limit, so I guess those are just over the top.

Do teens just want to sound cool? Is that why they claim to be this?

And what are your opinions about being "sxe" or abstination? Do people just waste their lives away by not having fun while they can? Or is it the best way to live?

I'm an Abstinator. I choose to abstain from sex, alcohol, drugs, bad language(for the most part), and any behavior that is damaging or harmful to myself. Though, I have never called myself or even heard the expression, "Straight Edge".

IMO, I have better, safer, healthier fun than those that must rely on substances to have fun. I'd argue that THEY are the ones wasting away their lives.

Yup, that is pretty much called "straight edge" in the popular hardcore-punk scene. But yeah, I think Abstinator is a better term for it.

the people who claim they are straight edges go around telling evryone "oo no i don't smoke. im straight-hardcore-edge" are posers imo. if you don't drink, thats fine, but you don't have to shout it to the world. those are usually the ones under 21. but some straight-edges are cool. and those are the ones i like to hang with.

Despite the fact of having that age rule there, there are still many teenagers that are very sensible and mature. I know thie rule applies to everyone and its obviously there for a reason. But in my eyes sensible people have as much right to drink smoke or whatever, Just maybe not at a proper club or somewhere. I drink when i want to drink but its rare.

How many of them do you think drink at parties, smoke and fuck? Find the latest statistics for underage drinking and pregnancies. Do you think anyone cares about following the law?

There are enough underage drinkers out there that don't care about the law. They like to drink, they like to smoke weed, they like to smoke cigs. Under 21 and straight edge isn't any different than over 21 and straight edge. It's saying "I don't care if I'm 16, 21, 30 or 80, I'm not doing any of it." If someone was just following the law, they would do it if they had the chance when they got over 18 or 21. Straight edge kids wouldn't do it either way. I've heard this argument before and it's really not even close to being accurate.

I'm not vegan, vegetarian or whatever and I drink caffiene and take aspirin, etc. Some kids are just more serious about not putting anything in their body that isn't natural or could be considered harmful, even though veganism can do a lot more harm than good. I don't see what you're gaining by saying it's "over the top" though.

Last time I checked, the "cool" thing was to drink, fuck, smoke, get high, etc. Not not do all of those things. Some kids think it's just some cool label, yeah. But for a lot of kids, it means a lot. It means a lot to me.

What makes you think you have to smoke, drink and fuck to have fun? That's the entire point. Straight edge people don't need to fuck themselves up to have fun. We go to shows. We read. We watch TV, we play sports, we do other things. We don't need to get so fucked up we can't remember the last night in order to have a good time. It's unnecessary for us. That's the entire point.

And a lot of kids who drink always walk around saying "We're gonna get crunked tonight" or the people who smoke do NOTHING but talk about weed. "We're blazing today." What's your point?

It's usually the people who smoke and drink that go around braging about it.
If you're 'straight edge' then you're very sensible but if you're gunna go around telling everyone.. well it would piss me off.

You totally missed what I was saying. I said I think that people who say that they are straightedge when they are minors and are just basically following the law is not even the "real" thing. What I was saying is that the term should only apply to people over 21 when they can legally purchase those things.

Yes, there are tons of kids who don't care about the law. But there is still a law, and technically, even if everyone in America stop caring about these laws... it is still a law. And "straightedge" teens are just following it.


Well maybe the caffience/aspirin/diets are not over the top, because some of them are actually good. I said not having sex is kind of over the top because there are birth control out there and people can do it without getting pregnant.


I know I know. I did not really say that I think it's cool. I asked if you think it is cool. I am "straightedge", however, I am 18, so as I say i'm just still following the legal drinking age law. I was also implying about random posers like J.R. said, who go around overacting. I agree to him that being clean is good, but is there really a reason to parade around town screaming it?

Once again. I did not say this? I keep telling my friends who smoke pot that they can do other stuff to have fun. I tell them to go to shows, to the the movies with me too, but most of them don't want to "waste" money by doing that way.
