Do you really think that the government or society can ban a word? The N-word is used, in my opinion, by people who want to be disrespectfull towards africain americain, and that's why the word is so stupid! But there are many arguments, i might share my other thought later..what do you think?

I think a school or a business can ban a word, but the government shouldn't ever. As far as "nigger" it's generally a horrible word, depending on how it's used. It's the intention behind a word that should be banned, so words like "faggot", "retard", and "freak" could also be banned... um, how about just ban demeaning language?

We don't have to say "the N-word" here. We're just talking about its usage, not using it against someone.

And yeah, they should ban cracker, too. It's funny how white racism is totally unacceptable but black racism is routine.

You can't on the whole in practice effectively ban a word, but such absolutely derogatory words like "nigger" should nevertheless be made officially unacceptable and if a someone is heard using it they should definitely be reproved.

PS. To deaditefuckgirl, I see where you are coming from about some black people using the word themselves But, without going deep in the question because it is kind of complicated, would you allow other people call you some of the things that you would be able to call yourself? What I mean is are there not things that are alright for you to call yourself but would be offending if other people called you? Yes there are and from that perspective you can understand why the word "nigger" can be unaccetable to use even though some black use it themselves.
