In my research for a university a project, I came across something interesting, the account of Michael McCusker, one of the sergeants who witnessed a gang rape by Americans during the Vietnam war.
Quote:
They were supposed to go after what they called a Viet Cong whore. They went into her village and instead of capturing her, they raped her -- every man raped her. As a matter of fact, one man said to me later that it was the first time he had ever made love to a woman with his boots on. The man who led the platoon, or the squad, was actually a private. The squad leader was a sergeant but he was a useless person and he let the private take over his squad. Later he said he took no part in the raid. It was against his morals. So instead of telling his squad not to do it, because they wouldn't listen to him anyway, the sergeant went into another side of the village and just sat and stared bleakly at the ground, feeling sorry for himself. But at any rate, they raped the girl, and then, the last man to make love to her, shot her in the head.
Thoughts on this incident to ponder for the civilised and intellectual human beings. Take this as a questionaire and answer them on what you think -
What is it in the American psyche that permits the use of the word 'love' to describe rape?
Did you notice that this idea of 'making love' is not only shared by the rapists but the author as well?
Why do you think the Americans shot the woman in the head after the gangrape? (This is different from Japanese WW2 rapists who generally left their victims alive.)
Did reading this incident disgust and horrify you? If not, do you live in United States or an Arab country?
Do you think these rapes of thousands of women by Americans in poor countries, acceptable?
Does this reminiscence give you an insight to the working of an American male's mind? What do you make of it?
Note: It must be noted that while Americans read and decry the historical Japanese rapes of Chinese, they are usually unaware of the thousands of women raped in Vietnam, Cambodia, etc. The only difference is that while the Japanese raped and left the women to tell their tales, the Americans shot them. The most outrageous and brutal of these rapes by Americans was in an orphanage where 36 children, aged from 6-13 were raped and butchered in Mai Lai, North Vietnam.
In case you have doubts about my perception of Americans: If you want to experiment this American nationalist denial, ask any politically interested American about the rapes of Vietnamese women and kids by American soldiers. Once you get the response, which is either outright denial or nationalist justification with a "these things are acceptable and normal in war", you will get your doubts cleared first hand.

I am totally not surprised. Vietnam war was old. These kinds of things were happening in Iraq also which is a recent incident. Soldiers raping helpless Iraqi women. And in the debate here, responses from Americans were - "These things are common in war"

I am a vietnamese female myself and this came as a shock to me for i was totally unaware of this. We heard so much about the rape of nanking. i mean, i still appreciate the soldiers...hmmm.
when you create an army of incompetent soldiers what do you expect.

I'd daresay, you are a South Vietnamese and hence didn't face what the North Vietnamese faced. The population of Vietnam was reduced by 10% and unlike the Japanese, the Americans were so brutal that they killed the women they raped to remove any traces of evidence or a chance of a child who gets born to revenge.
Since quite a few Americans like to put up World War 2 violence as a justification of military rapes, perhaps it is time we take a walk back in history. After all, I am not a fan of running away from reality.

An Italian survivor of American bombing states that Black American troops, stationed in Naples, were allowed by their superiors free access to poor, hungry, and humiliated Italian women. The result of this interracial rape and sexual slavery was the production of a generation of pitiable mixed-race children, a legacy of the brutal conqueror.

According to an AP dispatch of September 12, 1945, entitled "German- American Marriages Forbidden", the Franklin Roosevelt government instructed its soldiers that marriage with the inferior Germans was absolutely forbidden. American soldiers were being told: "Teach these Germans a lesson -- and have a wonderful time!".
Which led to the rape of over 900000 German, Italian and Austrian girls, aged 8 and above.

In fact, of all the major belligerents in World War II, the German troops had by far the smallest record of rape and looting. The German and Japanese army's incidence of rape in all of Germany's occupied territories was even lower than that of American troops stationed on American soil!
In fact, the widespread rapes by US forces on Austrian, Italian and German women cause the Japanese emperor Hirohito to refuse unconditional surrender to US.
