Government coupons for...

Television? Come on now.

For those of you who either are American and haven't heard, or who just aren't from the U.S, I'll explain.

At the moment, most people are able to television entirely for free just by using the tried and true "Rabbit ears" method, which just picks up local TV signals and a few national channels. It's not the best tv, you get about 30 channels, but once again...it's free.

Now, the government had decided that all television signals must be digital, which is pretty annoying. This means that people would not be about use their bunny ears to get T.V unless they purchase a converter box, which costs roughly 40 dollars. Not a lot of money mind you.

However, the government is now providing coupons for these boxes...which means it will actually collect taxes from people to pay for everyone elses T.V

This irritates me, and strikes me as going just one step too far. What about you?

Re: Government coupons for...

There was a commercial about it, saying that the government would aid people switching from the antenna receptor method to digital signals. Although, they did not make it clear this would be done through taxes.

I am curious as to whether or not the airways will carry any other signals once everything is digital.
If people will in fact have to pay for other people's tv, simply because they have not yet made the change, that does seem somewhat unfair.

Re: Government coupons for...

Well, the government doesn't have any money of it's own, so any extra revenue it uses to fund these kinds of projects come from taxes.
