Why do you assume we're ignorant?

I've been on other forums, and we've discussed religion.
But I have a question for religious people out there.
Why do you assume that us "non-believers" are automatically atheists and ignorant?

I've gotten from so many people that just because I don't believe in the Bible automatically makes me an atheist.

Now, I personally consider myself a Deist. Go ahead and look up Deism. It's basically the belief that there is a God, but He is not an interactive God. He kind of just stood back and let things happen the way they were going to happen. To me, it makes more sense than a God that just let things like war, genocide and hunger happen.

I've also had people tell me that I'm ignorant about the Bible. Why is this the assumption? Maybe I'm a special case. But I have read the entire Bible. I go to a Catholic university, yet people still seem to question my understanding of the Bible.

Why is this?

Re: Why do you assume we're ignorant?

I agree with you not all people who aren't religious are ignorant, neither are all people who do.

I fall into the former catagory, I've also read the Bible, the Tulmud and have studied religion from a historical standpoint for years. I've had some wonderful disscussions with people from a multitude of religions about the subject. I also agree that people shouldn't assume just because you don't follow a religion you don't know anything about it.

Re: Why do you assume we're ignorant?

I think there are a bunch of kids running around who know nothing of the bible but say that it is false without understanding it at all. I think that ruins it for you, for me, for any other "non-believers".

Re: Why do you assume we're ignorant?

The Bible takes a lot of interpreting and the sheer numbers of Christian denominations demonstrates that.

And it is wrong and jumping to conclusions to assume non-believers have no idea about religion. What about the person rigourously brought up with religion, but ends up not believing (my case)?

God doesn't exist. Period. Get over that fact and move on. And atheist aren't ignorant...Christians are the ones who are narrow-minded idiots. They live their life by a book. Lame.

Why is it wrong to live with faith, why is is wrong to hear out others?

Certainly there are Christians who believe that the way of Jesus is the only way bar-non and won't even discuss the possibility that they are wrong. But wouldn't that be true of any religion?

You contradict yourself by saying that God dosn't exist, as that itself is being narrow-minded. For you not to be ignorant should you not be open to the idea that there could be a higher power?

After all, you don't know for-sure. None of us do.

What? I don't believe in God. I'm an Atheist. Look up the word, kid. I'm not "open up to the idea" of a higher power. This must be your first time discussing religion, because your argument is rather weak.

I wasn't contradicting myself, either. That's not being narrow-minded at all...it's stating the truth.

Your being completely closed minded. Being unwilling to look at another's point of view. Its hypocritical to call Christians closed minded for believing in a God when you won't even consider the possibility. The "Its stating the truth" comment. Truth, truths are proven. Prove there is no God, disprove Religion. Without facts there is no truth. So clearly the unwillingness to consider the possibility of a God as there is no "proof" one way or the other shows that you are being closed minded.

I also liked that you immediately begin to use words like "kid" the moment your philosophies are questioned. Shows confidence. Hah.

I'm not going to fall into the traps that they fell in. My life will not be filled with lies and start believing in random shit without proof. I am wise. I'm not a moron. I could name endless things about why religion destroys people. The answers are obvious, too.

Everyone who follows a religion think their religion is the correct one. We are required to live by their rules. We have to wash away our sins. I know what you guys study...and it makes me sick. If you ever compare atheist to Christians...the final outcome will always point to the Christians as being ignorant of others beliefs. It's common knowledge.

Would the statement "There is no God. Period" without proof not be considered ignorance, simply because..there is no way to know?

I myself am actually not Christian, nor do I conform to typical religion, so the statement "what you guys study" dosn't really apply to me, however I do entertain the possibility that any religion could be right. We don't know, its not what I choose to believe in, but it could be.

Being open to the beliefs in others, and respecting them is truly being open-minded.

Re: Why do you assume we're ignorant?

Fine. Call me close-minded, but it doesn't change the fact that the entire Christian religion are foolish people. I live my life how I choose...same with the other atheists in the world. None of us follow a stupid book written years and years ago. You could say that Atheists are more intelligent, than the Christians. Statistics have shown that already.
