Should School Buses Have Seatbelts?

This question occured to me while I was riding the bus into school a few days ago. I have heard about a bunch of school bus accidents lately, and it occured to me...why don't buses have seatbelts? I mean, especially on a bus full of kids. I saw a video on World's Most Amazing Videos of a middle school student who flew up into the roof when his bus crashed! Not to mention the number of injuries any bus crash can cause, whether it be a serious accident or not. One such example of a serious crash was the college bus in Atlanta which crashed over an overpass and killed 10 or so people on the bus, and injured a bunch of others. If there were seatbelts on buses, some of these injuries could have been prevented.

So what is your opinion? Should school buses have seatbelts, and what is your argument for or against it?

The majority of the buses over here do not have seatbelts...and I personally think it is a bad idea that they don't.

Re: Should School Buses Have Seatbelts?

This question can best be answered if research is done on crash statistics. If seatbelts could have prevented a great many injuries caused by accidents, then using seatbelts should be encouraged at least in those placese where the majority of these accidents occur. If the accidents are relatively few, then greater care must be taken by the drivers to avoid them or an increase in bus safety not related to seat belts.
The real question will inevitably be presented by the politicians, "Where will the money come from?" It is unfortunate, but money always takes precedence over the safeguarding of the youth.

Re: Should School Buses Have Seatbelts?

Statistics and studies must be made available. Those who do not wish to wear seatbelts will be responcible for it. If there is an accident, any injuries they sustain is their fault.

Yes I would...I wouldn't want to smash my head on the window in the event of an accident and end up with a concussion or get killed because I wasn't wearing it. Just because some teenagers don't wear seatbelts doesn't mean everyone won't...

Re: Should School Buses Have Seatbelts?

i think part of the reason why school buses don't have seatbelts is so that young children, in times of emergencies, can get off the bus quickly without having to struggle with their seatbelts. Also, assuming that the children are sitting properly in their seats, the seats in front of them are designed to act as a barrier and keep them from falling around in an accident. Of course though, as i mentioned, for this to work properly, the kids have to be sitting straight, with their feet on the floor facing frontwords, and unfortunately, this is often not the case.

Re: Should School Buses Have Seatbelts?

The bus that went over the side of the overpass in Atlanta was a charter bus, all of which have seatbelts. That said, its incredibly impractical to wear seatbelts on a school bus. You have to be ready to get up and off quickly, and bookbags make the whole thing completely cumbersome.

Some of our buses have seatbelts. But some people in regular cars don't wear seatbelts so what makes you think they would on a bus? I personally think seatbelts don't save lives.
