Re: Debate on the banning of pit bulls

I think Pit bulls should be allowed as pets ONLY after a liscense is required to own one. No one with children should be able to own one. My theory is that all animals revert to their natural instinct at some mental point, and that this point is much lower for pit bulls. Sort of like how a boiling point differs for different medals. This is not scientific at all, just my guess.

Re: Debate on the banning of pit bulls

No, I do not think that pit bulls should be "banned." I think that the only reason why pit bulls have been given a bad name is that people train them to be mean and to fight. But, that's just me.

Re: Debate on the banning of pit bulls

No, pit bulls should not be banned. It has been proven that pit bulls aren't born mean. The owners make them mean and train them to fight. I had a pit bull and she was nice. She loved kids and she never bit at someone or tried to hurt them. Mainly because I raised her to nice and to not fight. I'm highly against animal cruelity. You should see what they do to pit bulls.

Re: Debate on the banning of pit bulls

There is no reason to ban the possesion of pit bulls. It will be the responcibility of the owner to train and take care of the animal and to make sure that it does not cause harm. There is an established correlation between the behaviour of an owner and how the owner treats the animal and the developed behaviour of the animal.
If, however, the animal causes harm, the owner must be reprimanded and the animal put down in order to prevent future problems.

Pit Bulls are powerful dogs, thats the real problem. Children don't always know how to act around dogs. Numerous kids tried to hug the collie I had a few years ago, and their size made them intimidateing. Also, a lot of kids try to ride dogs, esp. after TV shows such as the Rugrats. Animal nature can trigger a self defense reaction. The problem with pit bulls is that they have more power to react with.

You're right about the dog's self defense, but think about it this way. Maybe it's the kids who don't know how to act around/treat the dogs they encounter. Maybe their parents should teach them to respect the dogs. You can't always blame the dog when you've got kids trying to ride around on them or pulling their tails and whatnot.

Re: Debate on the banning of pit bulls

No, Pitbulls should not be banned.
Because they are dogs and pets.
It just depends on who and how people train them and what they train them to do. There are just some sick people out there that train pitbulls and other types of dogs for nasty things such as dog fights. But if you actually think about it, pitbulls are protective (deffinitly the female ones) and I am sure if they are raised right that they will turn out good.

Re: Debate on the banning of pit bulls

But not all pitbulls that kill were trained to do so. Several children have already been killed by the family pet pit-bull going nuts. Heres what I propose. Goverment action in the form of sale regulation. This would work out for humans and dogs alike. Pit bull breeders would require liscensing. This is unfortunate, but needed.

Re: Debate on the banning of pit bulls

Whoa whoa whoa. Man I'm glad I'm back from vacation. "FutureNavyMan08" I have to dissagree with you. I believe it's all in how the owner raises them. I have a pit. I have an American Red Nosed pitt, and he is the sweetest thing ever. Nicer then all of my other dogs. And he is around children. My dad is very carefull about how to raise them. You just need to show them that they arn't in controle and that the Human is. My dad showed him how to walk right next to him, not infront of him, and he doesn't get on the couches or beds. An animal is only as mean as you let them be. I don't believe they have any more or less agression then other animals. He isn't played with roughly.

Actually, he was at the boarding place the other day for a couple of days, and he was beat up my another dog, because he wasn't agressive enough to fight back.

So my point is that, anyone that is willing to take the time to own them, and treat them right, and teach them, should have one. They shouldn't be banned. Though, they are where I live, the city by us. If they find them on the streets, or they are taken back to the pound, they are killed. Which is very wrong in my opinion. It's that way with Chows, Rotts, Shepards, and Pitts down here.

Animals are only as mean as humans make them. You treat them right, they'll be great pets.

Re: Debate on the banning of pit bulls

I think ya'll fail to understand that pit bulls with proper care HAVE attacked and killed children. Perhaps their owners did not know how to raise such a dog. But the fact is, not all animals that attacked were abused.

Well, then parents should teach their children to not walk up to dogs. And owners need proper leads.

Re: Debate on the banning of pit bulls

In australia pitbulls have be banned from being bread and so removing them from australia, I think that this is a good thing because pitbulls are a hunting animal and no mater how sweet the dog it still has its hunting instincts. A while ago there was a pitbull in my home town that attacked the owners own child. Also the mother tried to pull of the dog but she and a helpful guy couldnt pull of the dog so the guy eventualy had to cut it throat to make it realease. More over the dog had never attacked any one before, and it was raised well so...............

The child was probably taunting the damn dog. See, that's what pisses me off. If the dog was so sweet and well-behaved before, it was probably the kid who set the entire thing off. The fact of the matter is KIDS NEED TO LEARN HOW TO RESPECT ANIMALS. It's that simple.

Pitbulls are not hunting dogs. They were actually bred from a mix of the Bulldog and English terriers to participate in DOG FIGHTS. Thus, the pitbull's bad name. There are other breeds that are hunting breeds. Why not ban all of those breeds, too, if they are so dangerous?
