Oh yes...I think that people do it mostly because it's pleasurable nowadays. Having sex because you love your partner or for babies is much more platonic and for the first one there are other ways to show what you feel. A kiss or a sweet talk could be enough to show your partner that you love him/her.

It was never for just having babies. Only the idiots thought sex was only for babies. Read your own literature, Kama Sutra of the ancient ages and you'll know what I mean. Sex was an act of pleasure from the very beginning of times...if you want more examples...prostitution was the oldest profession and it isn't for having babies....

If sex had no pleasure and was only supposed to be for love...I wouldn't have bothered there are other acts of love which take less time and energy. Like Nightwish said, a kiss or nice talk or even a rose would be enough. And because sex is pleasurable, the human race exists. If it wans't no one would bother to have sex and no babies... ;D

Is virginity anything more than a toy? Why is it given so much credance that it is like a jewel? What matters is the experience of feeling the act 'first time' it has nothing to do with preservation of virginity. Once you lose yours you will know what a fuss it is.
