Just curious. My big three are Neil Gaiman, Frank Herbert, and Ernest Hemmingway.

I really enjoy reading all things by Chuck Palahniuk and Augusten Burroughs.

mine favorite author is Shakespeare.

-Walt Whitman (He was a poet, but just as significant as any novelist)
-J.K. Rowling (Her books created a cult following that is absolutely darling and will continue for years to come, how can I not respect that?)
-Sarah Dessen (She tackles taboo subjects with grace and eloquent phrasing.)
-Shakespeare (Yet another case in which someone rose out of obscurity and managed to make a name for themselves...in my opinion, his works are still vastly underestimated.)
-John Green (His courage to accept himself and others so simply is refreshing, and it shows in his writing.)

It's been Kurt Vonnegut for quite a while. Cool sense of humour, interesting plots, interesting explorations of morality, nice use of language (not dumbed-down, not over-the-top vocabulary-vomit, not cheesy).

I'd say George R. R. Martin but overall he loses points for being a douchebag. Then there's Stephen King who has written some of my favourite books but has written way too much shit that outweighs his gold. Overall I'd probably say Steinbeck.

I haven't read any of his work before, but have American Gods at the top of my backlog. I'm pretty excited to see if it lives up to the hype.

John Green. Hands down my favorite author. I'm not even sure why, but i think it's because i have never enjoyed anything literary as much as i enjoyed The Fault in Our Stars. Although that is coming from a guy who is new to the awesomeness that is reading. So i'm not really an expert on good authors.
