They wanted people with familiar names, because they didn't think it was going to be popular.
Not all of the acting was bad, either.

The second movie was better, but you can't expect them to go from low-class to first class.
Those who make the movies, when making a series, want the feel of the movies to stay relatively the same.
However I could tell that the actor's were trying harder to be genuine than in the first one.
And the iris colors were much, much clearer in the second one.
Alice was just as hoooot.
