I don't know about that then. Punishment shouldn't just be there by itself, it needs to be a negative reinforcer against negative action.
Toughness doesn't need to come through whippings, it should come through being honest with one's children. Like, parents do too much ego-preserving when they say to every kid "Wow! That's great! You're awesome!"; inspiring mediocrity and sensitivity to criticism.
I wouldn't nit-pick, but if you wanted to really toughen them up just be as honest as possible. Give constructive feedback. If you don't like something, say it.
Whatever you do though, in all honesty it's better than going along with this culture of pussies we've created.
