do it chronologically: Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, then Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio, Guns n Roses and Motorhead.
Then the big 4 (Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax) and then the rest (for instance: Pantera, Dream Theater, A7X)

When I started getting into metal I started with light metal like Bullet for My Valentine (The Poison, Scream Aim Fire are good albums to try out)

If you want lighter then Avenged Sevenfold are a good catalyst.

Obviously you want to listen to some classic metal too like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Dio, early Metallica, Iron Maiden and all those greats.

Depends entirely on what sort of Metal you are wanting to listen to, as there are so many sub genres

What's funny is that Avenged is heavier than all the bands you mentioned besides Metallica and some Sabbath.

Well, I mean aside from their first album they do have some much more slower songs/ballads like Dear God, Seize the Day, So Far Away etc. They are quite versatile. In general they are a great band and can stretch out to quite a lot of different people.

A7X are loud and fast but not exactly heavy I would say. They are VERY melodic too which I think is quite important when trying to get people into the genre.

This is weird, but try Diablo Swing Orchestra. I'm not a metal fan, but I love it, they combine metal with swing and occasionally opera.
