The drinking age thread got me thinking about how strict North American society has become in regards to Alcohol and Tobacco. I recently spent a month in Austria, and was pleasantly surprised at how easy going they (and most European countries) are in regards to these things. You can smoke almost anywhere (in shopping malls, government buildings etc.) and alcohol is available everywhere (even in fast food places). In contrast, Canada has forbidden smoking in public buildings, convenience stores …

I'm 19 so I can buy alcohol here (Canada), although I hardly ever get carded. Though I admit I used to buy when I was 18 (irresponsible I know, but what can I say?) without getting IDed. I think 18 would be the best age limit, once you reach the age of majority you should be entitled to everything that an adult is entitled to.
