Go dual core if you're main use is gaming. It will save you a butt load and you can OC them extremely well which will give your comparable frames to the i7. But if you have to have quad core, go with the i7. Get a decent triple channel set of ram, no need to go over 6GB for gaming. Regardless of what processor you buy, it would be such a shame if you don't OC.... ESPECIALLY the i7. Don't ever waste your money on the extreme versions. Processors nowadays will last you many years even overclocked …

High system Idle is normal, and in most cases should be high 90's. When a process, such as iTunes for example, utilizes 5% CPU usage, your system idle will reduce to 95%. When system idle is 100%, it means no processes are utilizing your CPU. System Idle itself has to do with power saving... not sure how exactly.
