All band kids cry that they have to do just as much as football players, well your full of it, ballet dancers have to do a lot of hard crap too, it doesn't mean their playing a sport.
when I'm playing football on friday nights, your job is to get me pumped, Honestly, thats the only reason your there, the only people that would come and watch the band are the parents, the only reason people actually watch the band is because your on during half time.
Now I'm not going to lie, when our band plays our school song, and I'm allready in the anamalistic state of mind, It gets me so pumped I feel like I can do anything.
But what does the band really have to do?, it doesn't require much athleticism, thats why anyone can do it, Fat kids, Skinny kids, Small kids, Weak kids, all they have to have is some lung power and know how to walk in a couple circles and lines. You Memorize a routine. emphasis on the Routine part.
on the field, there is no routine, I have to be on the ball constantly, If the quarterback calls an audible, I have to call an audible, I have to think on my feet, I have to run a different direction every play, I have to give up my body and hit someone as hard as I can every play, I have to jump as high as I can, Dive 5 and 10 yards, Yell audibles and check downs, Memorize a 100 page playbook by heart, watch hours of film so I can memorize everything about the other team that I can. And I can't get tired, because if I do I could lose everything, and this compares to what?
blowing into a horn and walking in circles.
I'm sorry, I respect band, But I'll never believe it is a sport. |

but it does take some athletic-ness or whatever. in my opinion at least.
and just to point this out, some band people probably work as hard as a football player. maybe in different ways. but they do. i know people like that. other's just "blow into a horn and walk in circles" as it was put.
And just to add this in, no one at my school really goes to watch the football team either. parents. a few people. but mostly everyone goes there to just talk. |

Last parade we did it rained like hell and it was absolutely fantastic going down the road with soaked face paint and just banging my surdu like there was no tomorrow ;D |

Money: -797 | Re: marching band I wouldn't say marching band. Most marching bands are nowhere near that level.
Now, drum corps is a different story. It requires serious physical conditioning and a dedication to success. I want even a single person to haul around a 25-pound contra at 180 bpm (that's 3 steps per second) and play with perfect pitch for 11 minutes and say that isn't a sport. And don't get me started on jazz running.
The most perfect example of a drum corps at work would be the Cavaliers in 2002 with their show, Frameworks. The site won't let me post a link, but search YouTube for "Cavaliers Frameworks" and it'll pop up.

I don't think it should be considered a sport, but more of a school activity/hobby.
I am not doubting that you don't do as much hard work as athletes because all activities take just as much time and dedication, but it's not exactly something athletic if you see my point.

what did you guys have to do? play music?
I had to be on the field at 5 to enjoy morning conditioning, and after wonderfull morning conditioning we got to engage in Full Pad practice, and after Full pad practice we grabbed some breakfast, then after breakfast we went back to full pad practice, then we stopped for lunch, then we went back to full pad practice, then we had some dinner, then we went back to full pad practice, and after all of that you know what we got to do next?
we got to condition all over again, Thats a sport. |

We did 6 and half hours of stuff a day. Some of it was playing. And then some of it was marching and stuff.
The worst parts the first day. Attention drills. My arms were dying. Plus I was sick. Cause of the shitty food. Some kid got food poisoning. : \ He had to go the hospital.
And it rained the whole week practically. They kept making us go the gym, cause it was soooo dangerous. psh. it was dumb.
And then it was also weird cause it was this christain camp. and the lady was freaking me out.
And then also there was soooo many bugs this one day. like you could barely see there was so many.
But that wasn't as bad as the time we had rehersal at like 8 at night, IN THE FALL. Whoever thought of that should die. There were so many mosquitoes. I had bites all over. It was so bad I was shaking and i couldn't play cause every time i moved i kept thinking another landed one me. I was crying by the end of that night.
you know what, i hate band.
but yeah. i mean, it's not a sport. but it's still kinda hard work. |

And this was during a JV football game that was being delayed because of said rain.
We've been outside in 42 degrees and 99 degrees.
Hydration is key. If you go through a day of any sort of conditioning or physical routine without enough water, I don't care who you are, you're going to be dying by the end of it. And normally we have water breaks every 45-60 minutes for only a quick swig of water, then it's back onto the field.
And we have 7 staff members running our practices, so you're always gonna be working somehow.
