Re: Why do so many people bash soccer?
If by soccer, you mean football, then you must understand that it won't be popular among Americans for many reasons. Americans copied the name 'football' for one of their own sport (American football) which didn't help make their copy as popular as the real football. Real football is one of the most popular sport in the world. In fact the FIFA World Cup and Euro series attract more crowds and viewership than even the Olympics. The amount of wealth of major football leagues like Manchester United or Chelsea dwarf even major American corporations.
Despite the desperate and relentless campaigning by NFL, American football hasn't even penetrated as much non-American viewership as leisure sports like tennis or WRC do. Hence it is only natural that Americans feel threatened by Association football, jealousy is a natural emotion when their most popular home grown sport looks like a cheap and weak fake compared to real football (or as Americans call it, soccer).

Re: Why do so many people bash soccer?
I honestly dont like American Football at all... I call it soccer because its the only way most people in the US would know what I'm talking about.

I hate the word soccer. It's football. American football stole its name. It makes more sense for soccer to be called football anyway.

Re: Why do so many people bash soccer?
I don't have a problem with the sport, it's just something I can't stand. And to be honest, most people here in America grow up watching sports, if any at all. I must say, I don't see soccer being among the popular population.

That's only in America. Football is a way of life in many countries
Not every sport can yield millions of fans screaming when their country wins something.

I've always pondered myself why American football is called what it is. I know it refers to measurement, but in actuallity, it's measured in yards! Why not Yardball? It makes more sense.
Oh, and I've read that Football is the widely reguarded as the most popular sport in the world.

Association football, which is twice as popular as the Olympics, is thrice more popular worldwide than all the American sports combined. It is also the only type of football that most Europeans or Asians know and care about. An inter-school football match in Europe is more likely to draw a bigger crowd than an American football world cup.
The only countries apart from Americans who care about American football are Canadians, Japanese, Australians and a couple of Latin American nations. It has a smaller lineup than even cricket, which is considered a secondary popularity sport.

Re: Why do so many people bash soccer?
Soccer is known as the 'world' sport....no other sport would bring the world together quite like football/soccer.

Re: Why do so many people bash soccer?
my proudest moment as a sports fan was being at Dodger stadium in 2004 and watching Steve Finley hit a walk off grand slam to win the game and the NL West. that was AWESOME.

Re: Why do so many people bash soccer?
Its becoming more popular in australia, and its definitely more skillfull than rugby or afl, but its just so boring. I'm not even into sports, but I can handle aussie rules football, but nothing really happens in soccer (from someone who's never really bothered with it's perspective).
