However every day at football practice I have an upperclassmen giving me shit. Like its not a big deal, what gets me is I'm not sure if it's personal or he's just going hard.
For example we'd do blocking drills and he'd block real hard and pretty much grab my pads and try to get me to the ground. Another example I was running a route as a part of a drill and he "gets hands" by literally shoving me down.
Most people just go 50-75% effort and this kid's trying to throw me down. I think it is because I'm just starting the sport and I'm not good yet thus the lack of respect but it's starting to piss me off, upperclassmen or not. I mean if this was a freshman or someone I know I'd just be all "the fuck dude?" but I'm trying to be respectful and all but im tired of it and im tempted to just go off on the dude since if i dont i dont want him to think im a pussy that takes it. but on the other hand i dont wanna make it personal.
I try not to react you know just take it with a grain of salt but it really bothers me having a guy on the team who I don't know if he's got it out for me or is just going hard.
I'm just wondering what I should do in this situation to gain some respect. |

Where I grew up our district had ice hockey and a senior gave me major shit when I joined the team my sophomore year. He played pranks, went hard on me on scrimmages and even roughed me up pretty good. I confronted him during lunch period and told him that I got the point and i will consider his antics as a customary welcome to the team, but if he did anything else going forward I would respond in kind. The next practice we ran drills and he tripped me when I wasnt wearing a helmet, and I punched him right in the beak. I did get my ass whooped by his boys, but bottom line; we both walked around school with fuck up mugs and everyone knew how it went down. You arent made of glass, stand up for yourself. If you get pounded out by a couple people because of it, oh well. But, I never got fucked with again after that. Well worth it. |

I am certainly not like this, but I know how it feels because it happened to me freshman year. Honestly, keep doing what your doing and you'll get through it. Don't say anything stupid or do what manny did because that will make your players and coaches look at you badly. I just powered through practice and it would make me want to cry sometimes, but just get through this season and it won't happen Next year. Also, during off season, lift weights a lot to build up strength so you can take on these players. To be honest, it's helping you in the long run. It will make freshman games seem much easier. |

had the same treatment as you.
My second year of high school (we had our soccer team for the first time that year)there were so many girls that were Seniors and they have been playing all of their life. They knew exactly what to do. Every time I would make a bad pass
or step up out of my position I would just get the most evil looks. But then I realized that I didn't care anymore. Because it was something new to our school
and I wasn't the only one that didn't know what to do. Then once season began the upperclassmen started being nice to me. One senior girl ever stayed 2 hours after practice to help me on shooting at goal. I think at the end of the day you all are teammates and you have to have each other back's. That's what working as a team means.
Last year I was a junior and we had 2 or 3 freshmen on our J.V. team. yeah we teased them. We always gave them crap, and said ''Hey freshmen''. But that's just in teasing. Those girls were on my team doesn't matter what grade they are in and we all still looked out for each other. We were all very protective over our freshmen.
I think that might be what this guy is doing or maybe he is trying to push you so hard to just see if you will take it. Once season starts I think he will realize that you are on his team. |
