Should I have the operation?
Okay... I have an overbite (which basicly means my top two front teeth kinda stick out because my bottom jaw is further away than the top) it's not ridiclously bad, but I am self conscious about it because some wankers from my old school used to bully me about it.
So, my dentist told me I could have an operation to push my bottom jaw forward... but they will have to break it and crap first in the operation /: so it's basicly plastic surgery.
It's on the NHS so it'll be free... but the problem is I have E.D.S. (It's a really rare disability where the tissues in my skin are weak, so it takes ages for me to heal from colds/broken bones and crap, and I get tired really easily) so the operation may be even more painfull for me and it will take longer for my jaw to heal.
I really want it done because I hate the way I look atm, but I don't want the pain.
Before anyone says have braces, they give me them before and they made my gums bleed loads because of the E.D.S. again.

Re: Should I have the operation?
I really wouldn't do it. Ehlers-Danlos isn't really something to be testing unless it's something that you seriously need to do. Major surgeries are different. If you need it, obviously you have to do it. But if it's something as minuscule as an overbite, I wouldn't push your luck. Especially if it involves them breaking your jaw. I'm assuming you have Type 1 or Type 2 EDS?

Re: Should I have the operation?
I have "classical" EDS My dad doesn't really want me to have it either... my sister's friend had it done before, and he was fine, but he didn't have E.D.S. /: I may ask my doctor about it soon.
Type of EDS <-- I have the first one.

Re: Should I have the operation?
Yeah, I'm pretty keen on medical stuff. I'd consider myself very knowledgeable about it. I really wouldn't risk it, though. A little teeth problem is cosmetic. A broken jaw that takes God knows how long to heal is a serious health risk.

Re: Should I have the operation?
I think the question you should ask yourself is; can I live without it?
Don't fix what isn't broken. No-one is perfect, and we all have imperfections.
There are ways of changing how you feel about yourself, it doesn't necessarily mean going to extremes and changing how you look, but rather changing how you FEEL about how you look.

Re: Should I have the operation?
Orthognathic surgery - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Quote:
|
After orthognathic surgery, patients are often required to adhere to an all-liquid diet. After time, soft food can be introduced, and then hard food. Diet is very important after the surgery, to accelerate the healing process. Weight loss due to lack of appetite and the liquid diet is common, but should be avoided if possible. Normal recovery time can range from a few weeks for minor surgery, to up to a year for more complicated surgery.

i'm quite interested in surgery too, having an overbite myself. I'm simply not comfortable with my appearance because of it.

Re: Should I have the operation?
If you feel that uncomfortable with the way your jaw is, then have it done. I am sure it wouldnt be that bad, wouldnt they give you something?

Re: Should I have the operation?
I'm not completely unhappy with my appearance, I just always think people are judging me because of it.

Re: Should I have the operation?
Everyone goes through that, though.
Especially in teen years.
if it REALLY bothers you that much, i would probably suggest waiting it out until you know for sure.
also, most people have at least a little overbite. teeth aren't meant to be perfectly aligned or they wouldn't sit properly.

Re: Should I have the operation?
True.
But as you said (omfgidc) every person has imperfections. Well most the time they dont even ruin a persons appearance at all

But you don't understand. She has E.D.S. It's not that simple.

Re: Should I have the operation?
I agree it's not simple but if you feel too uncomfortable with the way you look then you should have it done. Feeling good about yourself is important.
Considering you have EDS, it would be the best if you consult with your dentist or whoever who would be doing the surgery. They will tell you all the risks and such. If it sounds too bad, then don't do it.
You said you don't want the pain. Pain is something that must go with it! So think about it, which is stronger; your will or your fear of pain?
