In American school societies, anyone who is more intelligent than the lot is branded a 'nerd' and anyone who knows more about computers than them is called 'geek'. Personally I won't lay any credence to any of such idiots, we have such kinds trying to spread their cliches all the time here (eg. sstrailin and his gang of trolls). However if books and computer are your only experience of the world, I'd find that cause of concern. Extremeities of any kind are bad.
It is generally insecure people who try to 'belong' to a group by pushing better people out with a label. I generally make my own groups which quickly become the next 'in' thing so no worries here.

there's a huge difference between nerd and geek.
geeks can be popular and hang out with the popular people... they can be confident... they just like to do "geeky" shit.
nerd on the other hand... bookworms, teacher's pet, plain nerdy kids... you get it.
i call myself a geek and i work with totally hit chicks all the time... some i even talk to other geeky/nerdy guys about-not just video games-but mmorpg games and all those geeky stuff. then i ask the girls around me if they play any games... and if they don't, i tell them theyre missing otu and they must be losers (in a joking way of course).
i'm a closet-geek... but not really in the closet about it.
Alex_Rosque i have much respect for you. we think alike. (i think) |

So long as a geek who clearly has anti-social difficulties is happy with themselves, then I see no problem (assuming that the anti-social difficulties do not go horribly wrong some day...) I would certainly say I was on the geek borderline. I have definitely been a geek in the past and have retained some of those qualities as I've got older. I have a good social life and I'm happy with myself, so all is good |

I personally am slightly geekish (i like computers to a degree and am generally obsessed with technology, have taken C++ because I actually wanted to, make good grades, etc.).
I define nerds and/or losers as people who are just incapable of socializing at a normal level because they just don't try. I'm not talking about people that can't physically communicate, but people that refuse to try and become friends or communicate with anyone else besides the people in their little 'groups'. At my school there's like an army of 'nerds' that aren't geeky at all. Some of them make pretty sucky grades, they're aren't that smart, and have just plain annoying personalities. Most of them are obsessed with anime and the like, but I don't think that has anything to do with it. They aren't geeks, they're just nerds because they refuse to hang out with anyone but the other people in their little clique. It keeps them from having to live in the real world and communicate well with other types of people (namely adults). |
