I got a pack a bc pills for the first time yesterday but can't start em till sunday. Its ortho tricyclen lo although i'm excited i've heard complete horror stories such as no sex drive, sore breasts, weight gain, constant hunger, terrible mood swings, depression and sickness. I'm now turned off and hesistant of trying them i only spent $10 for 3 months so its not a huge waste. I'm just wondering if anyone who has
I take birth control, not the same one that you're going to be starting, and I've never experienced any of those things do to the pills. Those usually aren't common side effects.
It does not reduce sex drive or make me ill, gain weight or cause extra pain, or anything like that, but, for the first couple of months, it gave me horrible, horrible PMS. It got to the point that the people who loved me most couldn't stand to be around me anymore because I would snap at the slightest thing. I would freak out over things that were completely ludicrous, but I was completely unable to rationalize. I couldn't control my emotions. It was kind of insane.
BUT! I take Yaz and I've heard that that is a common side effect only of that particular brand, so hopefully you won't have the same problems. Even if you do, it will get better. I still have the crazy emotions, but I'm able to control them and even calm myself down long enough to 1. realize that most of them are irrational and 2. prevent myself from doing something stupid.
Just stock up on Midol. It really does help, with everything. And DON'T FORGET TO TAKE IT!
Oh, and the bleeding is erratic and varies from person to person, but often it begins with spotting and then is just sort of an average flow.
I can't comment on the BC specifically 'cause I'm dudely and they haven't invented a male BC pill yet.
However...if you read the information packet with tiny print that is inside the box, it probably lists the percentage of people that experienced those side effects in each trial--like, "5% of patients reported nausea" or whatever. The FDA requires that they list those kinds of things, but if we were talking about much more than 5-10%, it wouldn't get made & sold, when there are other drugs with less side effects that do the same thing.
My anti-depressant has lots of scary side effects like hallucinations and psychotic episodes and spontaneous combustion but I've been on it for over a year and have zero problems. With lots of medications, you may experience side effects for the first few weeks, but they go away as your body gets used to them.
I would say try it for a good month or two, and after two months, if the problems are severe enough to outweigh the positives of not being pregnant, go off 'em.

and as for spotting goes how heavy is the bleeding? and will it be bad that i have to use a tampon or pad?
Well if you're having spotting obviously you should at least wear a pantyliner unless you want to get blood all over your underwear. As far as how heavy it is, that's going to vary for each person individually. Personally, in the year that I've been on birth control I've only ever had spotting once for a day and it was incredibly light and spotting is supposed to be more common with my birth control than with others, and especially within the first couple of packs. Really, you shouldn't worry about it.
Also, you most likely won't get "terrible mood swings" so you shouldn't worry too much about that.
