IMDb Top 250: #40
A sociopolitical comment from Tony Kay, American History X is a bold and sharp study
on the impact and the results of extreme ideologies. Following Derek Vinyard and
his brother Danny, the movies builds, through flashbacks, the detailed profile of a
smart and ambitious teenager, who after a tragic occurence, espouses his father's
xenophobic and racistic beliefs and goes on to become a leading member of a neo-nazi
gang. A perfect direction from Kay, who makes an extensive use of slow motion,
with a lot of frames per second, and uses a magnificent black and white picture that
fills the flashbacks, Edward Norton's greatest performance and a multidimensional
and profound story. Containing one of the most shocking murder scenes in cinema
history, American History X is a breathtaking, raw and realistic film.
