Confused about my childhood friend

I have this childhood friend named Larry.
When I'm around other guys he will either stay next to me or get my full attention.
He knows I have been beated, cheated on, and used, by my past boyfriends.

But sometimes Larry becomes jealous and then hates the guy.

Is he just protecting me?
Or does he like me?

If he's doing it just to protect you, THEN HE'S THE MOST AMAZING FRIEND EVER OMG AW THAT'S SO CUTE.
However, since he's also trying to get your full attention, there's a pretty high chance he likes you aw he sounds adorable

He likes you for sure. Why would a protective friend feel jealousy or continually try and grab your attention.
