A confusing quote concerning writing.

I found this quote really interesting, and I wanted to share it.

"Forgive the length of this letter, for I did not have time to write a shorter one." - Oscar Wilde

Any thoughts?

I find that deep. Because he is talking about how long the letter is but he had time to write it long. And he directs it as he took the time to write a long one. It makes you think.

I thought it meant that sometimes less is more. It would take longer to write a shorter letter because one must think about how to write it more concisely. It's easier to ramble on.

to m e it gives the impression that he feels he need s to get everything 'out of his system' and it's hard to do that in a short letter.
