MMA > Boxing

    • MMA > Boxing

For my 400th post, i would like to explain why i believe that the future of combat sports is taking a new direction. Im not sure about the rest of Teen Hut, but after watching MMA, im EXTREMLEY angered with all the clinching in boxing. People say that grappling in MMA is boring, but then what is boxing's clinch? I just cant watch it..

Also, the big names of boxing are quickly drying up. A 39-0 record in MMA would be legendary, but in boxing it just means that you Ko'd 39 noobs. Cotto and Paqquieo would have been just what boxing needed, but that fell apart. De la Hoya is done, Mosley is on his way out, and Maryweather Jr. is not that far behind. With the exception of maybe Berto and a few others, the talent for boxing is like a antarctic glacier...slowly fading away.

However, in MMA, you have leagues upon leagues of talent in their 20's and early 30's that are able to fill fight cards, fill in as adequate replacements for injured fighters, and devlop in the meantime. Throw in a few personalities such as Coture, Lesner, Rogers, and King Mo, and i believe that not only will MMA overshadow boxing, but that it already has.

Well, Mixed Martial artists are the more skilled fighters.
Randy Couture vs James Toney anybody?

I enjoy both sports. And clinching in boxing is strategic guys. Excessive clinching sucks, but boxing is a sport about strategy and skill too.

Grappling in MMA is in no way boring if you know what is happening.

God-damn right. I tried watching boxing but my love for MMA is too big. The striking of boxers is beautiful, that can't be denied. But it's just... it doesn't measure up in the excitement department. You're not thinking 'Oh man he could land a headkick and knock this fool out right now' like when you watch a Mirko Cro Cop fight. You're not thinking 'Take him down, motherfucker, and pound the shit out of his face with elbows' like when you watch a Chael Sonnen fight. You're just watching some dudes circle around. Jab jab jab.... *yawn*... jab jab jab.. OH THERE'S A HOOK! OH HE MIGHT BE HURT! jab jab jab...
formspring.me/LeeAnderson Eh formspring me I suppose. I have fallen to a new level...

MMA guys aren't necessarily better, if you put most MMA guys in a boxing ring, they would get smashed, same thing the other way around, and neither of them are the ultimate street fighters.

I also get frustrated when a boxer continously clinches and hugs their apponent, but it happens in MMA, too. I won't argue boxing is on the way down and MMA is shooting for the stars, but in no way is MMA "greater" than boxing.

You obviously don't understand MMA. So many things can happen in the clinch in MMA. It's a very very very strategic battle going on inside the clinch. They're battling for underhooks, overhooks, body locks, working for single or double-leg takedowns, setting up the break from the clinch with an elbow, trying to grab the Muay Thai plumb to land a devastating knee to the chin or the midsection. There's a lot of stuff going on...

What? I never said anything negative about clinching in MMA. You can fight in a clinch in MMA but in boxing it's stop-and-start, which is why I said leech-like clinching in boxing gets frustrating for the viewer.

      I understand MMA.

That's because MMA fighters are more complete fighters, not boxers. Boxers only have the better hands most of the time.

      Boxing has too many rules.

It's like saying " sure the boxer kicked my ass under kickboxing rules, but lets fight under tae kwon do rules ( only kicks above the waist.) "

The best way to prove which fighters are the best is to put them in a setting where there is a small amount of rules like UFC or PRIDE.

Dusk, if you put them against each other on the streetz, the MMA fighters have a better chance of winning.

Lol Dusk. Street fighter is just another word for " untrained guy that likes to scrap in the street." Any MMA fighter will beat a street fighter. Just ask Kimbo.

Unless you meant it as " They are not the best fighters." then I dare you to tell me who the best are. I mean it makes sense to me that MMA fighters are the best because they take the best parts of each legit martial art.. but I might be wrong.

I mean sure there are rules in competition, but nothing prevents them from not following them in the streets.

My only problem when watching boxing is that I get distracted by thinking things like " man he is REALLY open for a leg kick." and stuff like that. btw.

No man, an MMA fighter might be the best, but it doesn't have anything to do with the fact that he practices for using MMA rules, most fights in the street are unfair, and involve moves that definitely aren't allowed in the UFC. Kimbo isn't a street fighter by the way. I agree with the fact that there should be less rules, but boxers aren't any worse off than anyone else who prefers to stand up if they know how to make the opponent play their game.

The thing is man, that in the streets NOTHING prevents the MMA fighters from using the unfair moves. Like I said, MMA fighters are the best unarmed fighters and they would definitely beat any street fighter in a 1 on 1 fight wherever.

Also, foot stomps, soccer kicks, etc were allowed in PRIDE...

Boxers actually fare pretty good in t3h str33tz. Why? Nobody knows how to fight. Plain and simple. Everybody will just throw punches. Boxers are the best at throwing punches. They are also better conditioned than 95% of the population.

And that other 5% of the population? MMA fighters. Remember UFC 1, when Royce Gracie beet streetfightrers, boxers, kickboxers, karate guys, and everyone else? That was streetfighting on a mat, and royce proved that grappaling could easily take out striking. You put a MMA guy that knows his stuff against a boxer that knows his stuff, with no rules, and i guarantee you that boxer gets his arms broken, his legs broken, and gets KO'd by a choke.

Brock Lesnar would take Iron Mike down really fast and pound his face in or choke him out, no contest.

MMA fighters are the best. The might not have the best hands, but they waaaay more than make up for it with their other tools.

Yeah that's pretty much what I was implying when I said 95% of the population.

Even James Toney said MMA fighters had awesome training. He said "wow man. If I had this when I first started boxing i'd still be undefeated."

There is no guarantees in fighting bro. Anything can happen, but generally it is true that the pure grappler will take out the pure striker because the striker needs to land a KO blow before the grappler can put him down.

You can't get KO'd by a choke btw, you get choked out X( but yeah mma fighter will choke out a boxer easily. As long as the MMA fighter doesn't get cocky and tries to test out his boxing by boxing with him, they have a huge chance of winning the fight.
