It's safe to assume that any guy who tells you penis size is NOT important is trying to make their self feel better about their small size. Penis size IS important to women even if some of them won't admit it. I mean we all know that girls fake orgasms all the time if they really like the guy and don't want to make him feel bad about not being able to please her. But there is a catch to it. It's not so much the length that's important but the GIRTH. So a guy with a 6" penis and a girth of 6" would give more pleasure to a girl than a guy with 8" and only 4" girth.

OK, I'm a girl and I'll say this. For about 90% of girls size is not important, if that size is normal or about average size. Of course it matters if guy is 2 inches or 10 inchs, but anything in normal range, from 5-7 inches doesn't really matter for most girls.
Your "ideal" size is too big for most girls. Girls can feel pleasure in vag for only first few inches. And vagina is not endless, at the end of it there is cervix and if penis is constantly hitting it it hurts, really, quite a lot. And pain=end of sex.
You are right that girth is more important, but more then 6 in girth is probably too much for most women. As you can check (on wikipedia for example), average girth is around 5 inches or less and there is a reason why it's like it is. Only 5% of penises are bigger then 6.5 inches in girth. Why? Because they don't have to be bigger. It hurts you know to have something long and thick pushed in you for 10 or 20 or 30 minutes (or more).
Another thing is that women are really bad in guessing size, we often tend to add some inches to our BFs size because we don't know how big is it. Really, we don't. I don't. So most women actually don't know how big penis should be, they hear guys brag about 7 and 8 inchers and so they think "OK, my BF is probably 7 3/4 and he's great in bed so I'll answer 7 3/4". But thing is her BF is probably average in size, 6 or so, but she thinks he has to be big if he's so good (because of stupid huge penis propaganda).
Also, don't forget that clitoris is OUTSIDE of vagina and G spot (if it exist) is 2 inches inside vagina. So.... you don't need more than that really.

So, to conclude, girls don't know a lot about penises. We know what we hear from guys. And most of that are lies, as you know.
And once again, size is important if it's really really small or really really big. If it's in normal range from 4-7 it really is OK for most women.
