Favorite Orchestral pieces

    • Favorite Orchestral pieces

Well the title says it all. Post your favorites and recently discovered!

I've only just discovered the Roman Trilogy of Symphonic Poems by Ottorino Respighi. And I've fallen in love. Especially with the Pini di Roma (or Pines of Rome) suite. Beautiful powerful music. The finale, "I Pini Della Appia (The Pines of Appian Way) takes my breath away absolutely everytime I hear it.

most of the stuff I listen to are piano pieces... but I love this one.. :D

Fantastic choice I love this piece. Yeh I go through phases where at one point I favor pieces like this and at another point I want big bold and brassy.
ie- my favorite changes quite often lol

My favorite up until recently was the Prelude to act I of Parsifal by Richard Wagner

Ahh I LOVE songs like this. Orchestral arrangements of modern popular music are great! Have you eve heard of teh Royal Philharmonic Orchestra? They're probably the most famous for this.

And seeing as the final countdown was a string orchestra I'll post my favorite Brass piece. This is an amazing arrangement of Simple Gifts from one of the most musically impressive Musicals ever, 'Blast! an Explosive Musical Experience' The most impressive part is at about 5:30-

clint mansell is a genious. I love all of his work scores.

this may be video game music but Marty O'donnel does a crazy good job scoring games.

OMG I RESPECT YOU MASSIVELY FOR THIS CHOICE! I listened to piece about 3 times a day for over a month. Only this is the reorchestrated version for the Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers trailer isn't it? It was actually retitled rather cornilly to Requium for a Tower.

Definitely check them out. They premiered an amazing work titled the Queen Symphony which is a 6 movement symphony of Queen absolutely amazing here's a part of the... 4th movement I think

Clint Mansell is a legend. He's truly mastered the art of progressively building a score and maintaing musical constraint the entire way- the only film composer who can do it better i think is Hans Zimmer- for example in Chevaliers de Sangreal- this was most definitely my favourite part of The Da Vinci Code, simply because of this amazing song

And yes some video games certainly have amazing orchestral OSTs

Have you heard of Play! a Video Game Symphony. It's a symphonic program consisting completely of Video Game themes. I'd love to see it live. Here's a dodgy recording of them performing one of my favourite video game themes

So did I! Haha. You know, the year after I quit marching band (did a total of 3 years), the band of course plays this for their show. And there are so many versions on YouTube...I have no idea what it is. That's the one I usually listen to. It has millions of views, so I respect the view count. xD

haha yeh, millions of people can't be wrong :D And yeh the reason I think it's the reorchestrated version is because the original didn't have a chorus.

Ohhh how could I forget about this one :lovey:

How to Train Your Dragon has one of my favorite soundtracks, especially for animated films. But I love the whole Scottish style of music, I think it's great. Especially when it gets bold and brassy.

Oh and how could I forget about August Rush!!! That is definitely in my top 10 fave films. August's Rhapsody is amazing! And Mark Mancina did a great job with the movie's orchestral soundtrack. One of his great ideas was composing the final song first and then scattering elements of it throughout the rest of the film. Still took him 18 months to do it though.
