Running Tips

  • Re: Running Tips

I'm glad to hear that you are deciding to become more physically active. Running is really a great thing to do and has so many benefits. It doesn't just make you in shape more, but it will take stress away and do so much for you. I started off by walking a few miles a day and then after a few weeks I started running a mile or two at once. There are a variety of ways to get into shape for running, but you need to take it slow. First, you need to remember to stretch before and after you run. That way you will feel less sore the next day. If you feel like you don't have enough stamina I suggest try going to a track and running the straights and walking the curves or you could do it the opposite way, but it seems like the curves are much shorter even though they are the same distance. Then try running a lap, then walking a lap. Then try running two laps then walking a lap. And you can keep building up your stamina and speed. Remember to be hydrated and to cool down slowly by walking after your done running and to not just lay on the ground. Good luck.

A good way to start is to build up. I think when I first started running, it was a month or two progression:

    Run 5 min/Walk 1 min (x4) = 24 minutes
    Run 7 min/Walk 1 min (x3) = 24 minutes
    Run 10 min/Walk 1 min (x2) = 22 minutes
    Run 20 min straight

Try to do each one 4 times a week for a week or two at a time. If it's too much you can decrease running time/increase walking time and keep adjusting it in small amounts as you get more in shape. Once you build up to 20 min straight, you can increase minutes from there pretty easily or do some easy runs/some hard runs. If you're not preparing for a race or anything it's easier to track time than to track miles.

Always concentrate on your form. Shoulders relaxed, arms swinging front and back (not side to side), high knees (not exaggerated, it just helps lengthen your stride and makes sure you're not dragging your feet). A core workout in addition to running really works wonders for your form too. :)

Wow good idea (My HS does have a decent track field).

Thanks for the tip, I spoke to the captain of my high school's xc team, and he designed a rigorous schedule for me to build up.

What motivated me to run was that I went some place different every time. Thats what I do 'cause I get bored real quick of the same route, but now I go to the gym and go from there.
Don't ever give up on being physical active

    Hey Guys,

So Im thinking about starting running (I have tried before, but never gotten as far as more than 8 days of running consecutively.)

Can anyone give me some beginner's tips, routines, website resources, etc?

    Thanks!

    1. standing up is key
    2. while running, do not each chips. its tempting, but ive made that mistake alot.
    3. do not run into oncoming traffic. (i press this more then the others)

Don't run on consecutive days either. You will injure yourself or not recover.

Look after your knees. Mine are kind of fucked but they aren't toooooo bad. Go to a specialist running shop and they might put you on a treadmill to see if you under or over pronate. It's very helpful and good for you in the long run (haha, see what I did there?) if you invest in a decent pair of running shoes.

There are some podcasts you can download for an iPod from iTunes that are called Podcasts for Running. The man tells you exactly when to speed up and slow down, how often to run, and each week you move up a podcast and they get progressively harder. They are rated 5 stars because everyone loves them including me :)
