Drive

    • I've never been so thoroughly disgusted with a film. I had such high expectations for it, the reviews are great (albeit they usually are for indie movies) and I had friends tell me it was amazing. However, it was anything but that. The cast is excellent at first glance, but the most promising ones (Christina Hendricks and Ron Perlman) had around a minute and a half of screentime apiece, and they were terrible in it.

There was maybe 5 minutes of actual driving in the entire movie (seriously, there was more screentime of the actors blankly staring at each other) and the soundtrack was reminiscent of an 80's porn film. The dialogue, well what little of it there was, was cheesy and uninspired. Ryan Gosling's next movie role should be as a department store manikin, he could just repeat his performance from Drive.

A cheesy indie version of the Transporter with literally one-tenth of the action and suspense of that film.

Another review I saw wrapped it up even better:

The main character shows no personality at all. The movie attempts to sell his blank facial expressions, and limited dialogue as some sort of mystery man. However, this mystery has no clues, nor answers, and is a huge failure. The only mystery to me is how a sub par movie has overwhelming positive review, and why I spent 10 dollars on a ticket.

The main character risks his life on several occasions for a woman he rarely talked to. A 10 second lustful stare down is suppose to be the motivation of the characters multiple life risking actions.

The ending; well, there is no ending! This isn't surprising, based on the fact the bland main character doesn't have any background, personality, motive, or facial expressions. To sum it up; there is no ending because there is no movie. There is no movie, because there is no central theme, or believable motivation.

The fact this movie has overwhelming positive reviews shows the bar has been lowered for the new era of cinematography; or, that critics get a some sort of monetary incentive to sell extra tickets.

Have you seen Drive, what did you think of it?

    • I dare to say it's one of the best films of the year (I still have to watch Midnight in Paris, though - damn military service).

Excellent atmosphere, excellent direction (especially the driving shots), amazing pace and a brilliant OST (DEFINITELY the best of the year, so far). Yeah, the story was kind of basic, still the movie's cinematography and atmosphere were so perfect, that I really enjoyed it.

P.S.: Cranston proved once again that he's a fantastic actor.
    • Why do all of the positive reviews praise the atmosphere and cinematography? How does that make up for a bland story, bland acting, cheesy dialogue, and almost no action in a movie that was marketed as an action movie?

The soundtrack would have been good if this was an 80s film or something, but literally none of the songs fit to what was going on. There's just literally scenes of people staring at each other while crappy music plays in the background.

      Indie hipster garbage.

"Hey guys, let's have a movie called Drive but have pretty much no driving in it!"

Maybe because they were incredible? Personally, I had a long time to see such an excellent direction.

You were watching a different movie, right? It can't be explained otherwise.

You were probably expecting for the new Fast and the Furious movie.

There was no direction. The entire movie was flawed. The protagonist had no legit reason to risk his life. He had JUST met that girl and spent one day with her. Then he finds out she's married and has no feelings for him. Why the hell would that convince him to risk his life to help her asshole husband?

No, I was watching Drive. What about the acting wasn't bland? Was it Ryan Gosling not saying a single word for the first 20 minutes or so of the movie? Was it his character staring blankly for 30 seconds into the face of a girl who he barely knew and had no real chance to develop feelings for. How about Carey Mulligan? Well, her acting was great. She did a fantastic job of doing absolutely nothing. The only performance that I thought was even average was Perlman's, and he didn't get enough screen time to even fairly judge it.

That's what they marketed it as, so yes. I wouldn't have minded such a lack of action if the acting or story were good.
