Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck
I've heard this classic criticized before for being to melodramatic towards the end but i couldn't disagree more. The ending was really emotional, not because of the melodrama but because of the heartbreaking contradiction to the overall theme the book sent throughout. I re-read this from time-to-time since it isn't very long and it always puts me in a deep trance of thought.
Apt Pupil - Stephen King
Yeah I know this is technically only part of a book since it's a novella in King's "Different Seasons" but I think it outshined all the other novellas in the book which is saying something, since The Body and (especially) Shawshank were really good. Apt Pupil was just a great look at sociopathy and the general personal corruption associated with it. There's a pretty intense power struggle throughout and it had much more of an emotional edge than I was expecting.
A Song of Ice and Fire - George R.R. Martin
This is probably the best fantasy series ever written, because in the grand scheme of things being a fantasy isn't the selling point. It's not a typical "good vs evil" plot with mythical creatures and races but people dealing with politics, family drama and inner conflict. Great characters definitely make this series great. -
