I am glad it doesn't happen in England because however bad somebody is, it is still the wrong thing to make the whole society into a killing machine and to make individual people - jailers, nurses, caretakers of the death chair, into killers themselves.
The last executions by hanging, took place in 1964, and was abolished for murder in 1969 (1973 in Northern Ireland). And although unused, the death penalty remained a legally defined punishment for certain offences such as treason until it was completely abolished in 1998; the last execution for treason took place in 1946

I did a few days of debate over the summer and we argued a lot of topics, pretty much nothing was simply black and white. But the one everyone agreed was really difficult to debate as the affirmative (the "pro side") was death penalty.

Ever hear of "an eye for an eye"? Capital punishment may not be a deterrent, but it sure beats parole for the safety of society. At least in the USAlan

There might be cases where it is a valid punishment. But what happens when someone who is innocent gets convicted, there's no reversing death
Doesn't really change much being pardoned if you aren't alive

Criminals are treated better than homeless people who live in the street -
I don't think its as simple as an eye for an eye, and there have certainly been innocent people executed. Plus, as far as I know, capital punishment still costs more than life in prison so taxpayers actually benefit from the latter.
