Does that mean you are both comfortable with that and there is no embarrassment? If that's the case you should definitely describe is as "being walked in on" rather than being caught. I mean a part of me thinks it's sorta cool that u and ur parents were both cool enough to have a mature and honest discussion about masturbation. But another part of me thinks if my parents caught me and subsequently had a discussion about masturbation that I would hide in my room for the next year! I would be very embarrassed if anyone caught me masturbating, let alone parents. If that would ever happen I would be extremely careful not to reoccur. There are certain things that most parents would not want to know about their children. I am sure masturbation would be high on that list.

He did say "masturbated", past tense. But maybe there was also a bit of acknowledgement that, at least for guys, there isn't any particular age when getting horny stops. From what I've read, once we start getting horny at puberty that continues, and we continue to enjoy resolving it by cumming, for the rest of our lives. There is a gradual decline in frequency but it is gradual. According to "The Hite Report on Male Sexuality" guys also never completely give up masturbating. They may do it less when they have someone to have sex with but it will always be there.

I think what tends to happen is that our parents, and indeed other adults, are keen to preserve the "innocence" of childhood and not sexualise us too early, so they avoid talking or even hinting about anything sexual. Then, once we get to puberty and start having sexual thoughts, our parents may not notice at first and therefore not make any adjustment*. That creates the impression that sex is this new thing, specific to teens, and something adults don't do. But adults were teens, once, and maybe thought the same about their parents. Then, as adults they must have had sex or we would not have been conceived.

* The other possibility is that something, perhaps religion, has made saying anything sexual seem taboo to them. In that respect, it is just like how some religions or sects can preach against masturbation and the result usually isn't that their "flock" don't masturbate but that they feel guilty about it afterwards.
Parents can be very different. I got the talk, but other than that neither made any sexual comments. Meanwhile, I sometimes went round a friend's house after school and he and his father would talk about who they found hot.
