U.S. discontinued the high demonization banknotes that were mostly issued before 1934. These denominations were discontinued by the U.S. Treasury in 1940 but remained in circulation until the DOT recalled them in 1969. The denominations that weren't recalled mostly remain in the hands of casinos, museums and currency collectors.
These discontinued dominations are:

$1000.00 President Grover Cleveland
$5000.00 President James Madison
$10000.00 Chief Justice Simon Chase

You are wise to keep your granddad's $500.00 banknote. If it's in good condition it could be worth 5 or 6 times the face value to a collector. If you can keep it longer than that the value will certainly increase. What is the date that the $500.00 banknote was issued? What is the Federal Reserve letter (that's the big letter on the banknote)?Vivimus Volare, Volamus Vivere, -

I believe that Canada stopped issuing $1000 banknotes in 2000. In that year there was only 3.8 million banknotes in circulation. and not many transactions using them.Vivimus Volare, Volamus Vivere,
