It is usually considered a male hair pattern. I did once see an article that claimed that there were three basic public/stomach hair patterns:

1. A triangle with the base at the top and the apex at the bottom. This is the basic pubic-only pattern so the apex is at the perineum and the base is above the genitals in front of the pubic bone.

2. As above but with a line running up to the belly button.

3. As no. 1 but with a second triangle sharing the base with the first and with the apex at the belly button.

It then went on to say that most girls/women have the 1st pattern. It said pattern one was also present in males but that the other two were more common. But whether that is an over-simplification, I don't know.

But, because both sexes have both sets of sex hormones only with a difference balance, rather than having all of one and none of the other, with any pattern of hair growth that is usually considered male, some females can have a reduced version. So, for example, one wouldn't ever see a women with an Edwardian military style full moustache (search Earl Kitchener for an example) but some can have a faint moustache and would shave it because of cultural norms. I imagine the happy trail is a similar case. Some women can also experience thinning of the hair on the crown, i.e. male pattern baldness, though again a milder version and usually it is not so obvious/easier to disguise.

I have a happy trail. Not a lot of hair, but it shows because it is black. It was first hair after pubes. Just starting to get pit hair, and have no chest hair yet.

If you look reallllllllly closely, you can see a few blond hairs.

I don't have much hair there.

I have a some hair there, but it's not very noticable because it's light blond
