Will Ovechkin surpass Gretzky??

Last ngiht Alex Ovechkin reached 800 career goals...1 behind 2nd all time leader Gordie Howe and now 94 behind all time goals leader Wayne Gretzky. Growing up I always heard people say that nobody would ever beat Gretzky. Ovechkin is 37, and on pace to score 53 goals this season...which wuld put him at 833 at the end of this season.

So hockey fans, what do you think? Will Ovechkin be able to play long enough to pass Gretzky's 894 career goals??

probably will but he's still way behind on points which is a better record

at least there's some talk about hockey records though. Tom Brady has broken so many football records and Lebron is close to breaking the NBA scoring record. Hockey doesn't get much love since Gretsky was so far ahead in so many categories.

If he's at 800 goals now, then it would only take a few more years to get to the record (if he doesn't get too injured or retire soon)

800 is a whole lot though (I don't usually watch hockey)

well it's crazy because Gordie Howe was the leader for so long, and he played for 31 years!! The most number of goals he scored in a season was 49. Then Gretzky comes along and had several season where he scored more than 70 goals!! He only played for 21 seasons.

Ovechkin routinely scores 50+ golas in a season...so really if he does get to 833 at the end of this season...he COULD reach 894 NEXT SEASON! if he has a really good year.

Excuse my ignorance of US sports in general, and hockey in particular, but what’s the difference between goals and points? What do you get points for?

A goal is a goal. You get a point for a goal or a point for an assist. So a players total points is the total goals and assists added together.

Wow...I just saw something that said Ovechkin's current salary this year is only $1,000,000...that seems crazy to me.
