Everyone knows that essays are a huge deal in both high school but especially in university. Does anyone have any tips I could consider to try and improve my essay-writing (or simply writing) skills?
Any tips?

I'm in the same postion unfortunately.
What I've been doing is sitting with friends who are awesome at writing essays while they write them and ask them to explain their thought process. It actually works really well. -
Make sure you right a plan. You know, what you want in each of the paragraphs. Adding in description words, similies, metaphors also help, even if its to do with history. Not only does it give a picture of what your writing on, it also adds effect. Also just jotting down notes, dates or names help.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

What the guys said above and look at mark schemes for the essay questions, see what they want for a top essay and try doing that. Because for essays their mark schemes aint usually the same as short question answers, they don't have certain points you have to include they'll say stuff like "For a top mark the person has made good clear points and made sure they explained it probably giving good reasoning" etc.

Mark schemes are pretty important.
Try and state your stance on the subject in your introduction, that'll help your essay stay focussed through to the conclusion.[CENTER]

Be clear and to the point. Using bigger words does not necessarily make your idea any better nor any clearer.
Clarity is the key to success in writing, which is thought on paper. Remember that. -
This may or may not apply, but something I've read about and think would be very useful would be to take your first non-A graded essay to your teacher...and let them tell you all the reasons you didn't get an "A". Some teachers will be easier than others...some will be more helpful...but if you want advice on how to write a good essay and how best to earn an "A", who better to ask than the one grading it? And don't let them get away with easy answers...make them provide details and examples...as much as you can.
There is a book...I won't mention the name as I don't want to break the terms of use by advertising...but the author said he set aside three hours to talk with teachers for anything less than an A. He would drill and ask and comment and not let go until he knew exactly what was expected. This had the side-benefit of causing the teacher to think long and hard before giving him anything less than an A.
Food for thought...?
Good luck! -

I like this.
Essentially, being able to communicate your ideas to your reader is the most important skill you can have. Format helps readability, but if you don't say anything, it won't matter. Be direct, be concise, and be coherent.Love it when you call me Legs

Be honest mostly- I can't stand a person who tries to act like someone they are not in their writing. Obviously use good grammar/spelling and double-check everything before you turn it in. Another thing to do is to read- a lot. It can give you ideas on how to do different writing styles and how to keep your audience hooked on your writing. If you would like to talk sometime, feel free to PM me

another tip is to write. write and write and write. practice writing now. it's a good way of preventing writer's block and it makes ideas flow easily since you are already used in writing.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

- Be concise
- If it is an opinion essay, give lots of examples to back your answer
- If you have to read a passage and write something about it, sorry can't help since I haven't done that since Junior year11/4/08 - National Epic Fail Day
