I'm planning on getting an Alienware Aurora ALX Desktop over the holidays. Do Alienware computers have many downsides? High points? I would appreciate stories of your experience with them if you have one to share.

Never heard of them lol

Order the parts and build one yourself.

Order a Dell Studio XPS 9000 and save a ton of money. Alienware charges Mac-like prices and goes overboard with the glowing bullshit and hideous-looking cases.
Here's a XPS 9000 I configured:
- Intel Core i7 920 2.66 GHz
- 12 GB triple-channel DDR3 RAM
- 2x 1 TB hard drives
- Blu-Ray/DVD/CD burner
- NVIDIA GeForce GT 220, 1 GB graphics (see below)
- Windows 7 Ultimate x64
The graphics card is the default config option, you'll probably want to order a better gaming card separately and drop it in. It comes to about $2,120 as configured above. (Didn't include a monitor.)
I would only recommend building your own if you know what you're doing or know someone who does. I'm (trying) to build mine and I'm having a bitch of a time, since I've never done it before. - Intel Core i7 920 2.66 GHz

Really? I thought you'd be able to build it in your sleep. With your arms cut off.
I could, I'm a professional. -

I thought so too. The case I picked is the Antec mini P180, and while it's a nice solidly-built case, I can't figure how the hell to mount the hard drive properly. The case came with mounting brackets, but I'm clearly DOING IT WRONG somewhere as they don't seem to be the right size or some shit.
Not to mention I fucked up and ordered a PSU *without* modular cabling, so there's now a giant tangle of unused cables in the way since I can't remove the ones I don't need. SHIT. So far the only part that hasn't given me any trouble is the graphics card (it practically installed itself.) But that hard drive........The platters are probably bent in half like taco shells from all the accidental banging and bumping. -
I hate non-modular PSUs but I just gotta live with them. Oh and the HAF932 case went down 60$ from when I bought it so it's a deal.

and the graphics card is really the problem if its a laptop putting in a video card = next to impossible. but for desktops yes alienware can be a bit expensive - Intel Core i7 920 2.66 GHz

^ The XPS 9000 is a desktop. :p

My HAF 932 case is one of the largest and can fit basically any motherboard setup. But I guess I was wrong. EVGA x58 SLI Classified x4 can only fit on basically this Lian Li (PC-P80-B, PC-P80B) Black Aluminum Super Full Tower Computer PC Case.

It gets worse. Now it's time to install the CPU, and I've laid it in the socket (LGA 1156) EXACTLY how it looks in all the pictures I've seen, but when I go to lock down the latch cover, I hear this hideous "crackling" or "crunching" sound that sounds like pins bending  The latch lever feels like it's going to bend itself when I press it about half-way down, and I'm scared that I've already ruined my socket/entire motherboard.
-
I have an LGA 1366 socket.
-
Done. Now all I need is RAM so it will, ya know, actually work.
-
So, Trevor....what's your plan?
-
hmm is assus good? I hadn't heard of them until recently...
Are their netbooks good? -
