Photoshopping in media: does it disturb you?

This is the modern world. Many people don't care what is illegal and what is not. They want to tell people that their product is the best and in selfish company owners, that'll spark them to do anything they have to, to get attention. But it's not fair to say that only photoshopping is used to deceive people. They'll flat out lie using any means possible.

Actually, many people do care what is illegal and what is not. I don't know about you, but in the UK we have the Advertising Standards Agency, which keeps a fairly tight lid on adverts that, instead of promoting the positive and genuine aspects of their product, will willfully deceive people to believe in attributes that aren't there. So it's really not so hard to rein them in.

As it happens, I don't think the ASA covers photoshopping, but if that photoshopping is deceptive, I don't see why it shouldn't.

I'll stick to saying that I think photoshopping in media is perfectly fine, as long as they're not explicitly telling people that you -must- look like that.

So it's okay for the media to deceive people, but not okay for them to give an opinion? I don't geddit.

Saying that there is no ultimatem(sp?) for someone to look like that is wrong and shouldn't be allowed. That is a demand, not an opinion. That is what I meant.

But a demand is still not wrong. It's like a particularly enthusiastic street preacher demanding I find Christ. That's not morally reprehensible, he's just shouting stuff that I can ignore if I want. The media is the same.

Well then. They can ignore the photoshopping, too.

Well since they can ignore demands they can ignore everything, right?

Not-obviously-photoshopped media would not be dangerous if it was simply a case of ignoring it. The whole point is that, because you're ignorant as to whether it's photoshopped or not, you can't ignore it. It's the fact that it's deceptive that is why I'm against it.

I suppose that's well and truly fair enough in your eyes. Everyone has things they don't like. But most people make livings out of deception these days. It's humanity. And sure, it's disgusting.

Although for the thread; I've nothing against photoshopping at all. Just some of the twats behind it.

It's not really 'guarded'. I don't have anything against your idea, I accept that we will naturally percieve things different ways.
My words weren't meant to be angry or guarded, that's just the way I talk. <_< My vocab is rather... rustic most of the times. xP

The only thing thats disturbing about photoshopping is photoshopping models, and the way it affects young women and womens body image.

How do you feel about yourself after seeing these photoshopped images?
Do you feel more critical about how you look?

Can people reply pls? I am curious about this one :)

I for one, don't. I'm almost completely happy with the way I look and the problems I have, have got nothing to do with media influence.

I think if someone wanted to find out, there should be a universal place they could look or ask and the company would have to be honest.

It doesn't matter. They should -have- to tell if asked, whether they want them to know or not. There are a lot of companies that really aren't bothered by people having that knowledge, anyway.
