USA music VS Europe music.

    • Re: USA music VS Europe music.

I lived in Germany for three years. They listen to American music mostly. The good versions too not cut up like our radios play them. They don't cut out cuss words or even whole verses practically like the radios did to the song What it's Like What it's like by Everlast, I've but the words in bold of the words that were either bleeped or edited out of the song.

      What It's Like lyrics

We've all seen the man at the liquor store beggin' for your change
The hair on his face is dirty, dreadlocked and full of mange
He ask the man for what he could spare with shame in his eyes
Get a job you fuckin' slob's all he replied

      [CHORUS]
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in his shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to sing the blues
Then you really might know what it's like [x4]

Mary got pregnant from a kid named Tom who said he was in love
He said don't worry about a thing baby doll I'm the man you've been dreamin' of
But three months later he said he won't date her or return her call
And she sweared god damn if I find that man I'm cuttin' off his balls
And then she heads for the clinic and she gets some static walkin' through the doors
They call her a killer, and they call her a sinner, and they call her a whore

      [CHORUS]
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in her shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to choose
Then you really might know what it's like [x4]
I've seen a rich man beg
I've seen a good man sin
I've seen a tough man cry
      I've seen a loser win
      And a sad man grin
I heard an honest man lie
I've seen the good side of bad
And the down side of up
      And everything between
      I licked the silver spoon
      Drank from the golden cup
      Smoked the finest green
I stroked the baddest dimes at least a couple of times
      Before I broke their heart
      You know where it ends
Yo, it usually depends on where you start

I knew this kid named Max
He used to get fat stacks out on the corner with drugs
He liked to hang out late at night
      Liked to get shit faced
      And keep pace with thugs
Until late one night there was a big gun fight
      Max lost his head
He pulled out his chrome .45
      Talked some shit
      And wound up dead
Now his wife and his kids are caught in the midst of all of his pain
You know it crumbles that way
At least that's what they say when you play the game

      [CHORUS]
God forbid you ever had to wake up to hear the news
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to lose
Then you really might know what it's like [x3]
      To have to lose...

Pretty ridiculous, oh Europe has way better club music. I never really liked anything 'techno' before I lived there.

The retention of bad language is probably because everybody there speaks German ;). I'm pretty sure that if a German song made it to our radios no one would be aware of any swear words in it or think to check.

The last two are by Portuguese bands, but since this country is super patriotic, and they sing in English instead of Portuguese they don't get enough credit, they do awesome music.

As far as my personal taste in music goes, I like American music much more. But that's because I listen to mainly rap/hip-hop music, and I've literally never heard a good European rapper.

I will agree that House music is a lot better in Europe, mainly because I don't think it has the same following here in the states.

European metal surpasses American metal. As far as hip hop goes, I think that America takes the cake on that one. There are a few good European hip hop groups and rappers.. but from what I heard a lot of them lacking. As far as synthetic music goes, I like groups from both America and Europe.. so I am not really sure which one I would say is better.

This thread might be better in the music section, by the way.

I disagree with this completely as Joanna Newsom and Animal Collective are American born and I would say they are some of the best and most innovative artists out there (but it's an opinion, of course) there are some European greats though. Personally though I feel like the bests came out of the US

Joanna Newsom, definitely. Animal Collective are okay, but experimentalism doesn't necessarily extend to quality, admirable though that it is. But yeah, my comment didn't necessarily say that there isn't very good stuff in the USA.

Oh! I know I didn't mean to imply that. I just think that a lot of the greats are from the USA. I don't think AC's experimentalism is what makes them good. The layering is just fantastic and its very involved music.

I probably should have also mentioned hip hop as US has it on lock. Busdriver, A Tribe Called Quest, Wu Tang, Adverse, Immortal Technique

Perfectly said. European music is better for those with REAL musical taste, be it metal, trance, celtic, new age, folk, dance or even gypsy music.

If you musical taste leans towards lyrics containing a lot of swear words and videos with a lot of cheap thrills, then American rap music would probably be the best for you.

That is not to say there aren't good artistes in the US, but when they are they become mainstream in Europe, not United States.
    • Re: USA music VS Europe music.

An American artist gaining more popularity in Europe as opposed to the United States doesn't discredit the fact that they are of the United States. Also, I don't know how much I agree with the validity of that statement. American hip hop extends past what your idea seems to be of it. And it is wonderful.

The thing with American music is that for the most part you have to do a bit of digging to find anything worthwhile. That isn't a bad thing though.
