Well people shaped societies to begin with, and now society shapes people?
this. When people first made civilizations they shaped society. Every modern civilization takes things from previous ones, and when people are born into one nation they are pretty much taught the ways and lifestyle of the people of that nation. So the society shapes them. There are certain ways that people can shape society like if someone invents something revolutionary or starts a rebellion or something like that. These things cause change over time. But overall societies shape those born into them and all societies are shaped by the societies before them.
Re: Do people shape society or does society shape people?
Generally assuming the question is more towards today and not yesterday, I would say Society shapes People. I would talk about it and give reasons, but it's too late and I've already posted too many reasons on too many other threads
Re: Do people shape society or does society shape people?
That question is nonsensical because it implies that there exists a 'society' that is more than merely the sum of all individuals within it. It's like asking whether the neurons within a brain control the brain or whether the brain controls the neurons, which is meaningless because they are the same thing.
Re: Do people shape society or does society shape people?
A society is the sum of the interactions of many many individuals. And, as such interactions are extremely complex, this leads to the creation of social structures, social ideas and institutions. Religions, culture, popular trends etc. Since society, then, is the result of interactions between many individuals it is "made" and shaped by people. However, since society is not the result of only one person, but of many, it also has an effect on individuals. Certain behaviors and ideas the individuals posses are not one which are the result o that individual's personal thought and reasoning, rather they exist in society and are passed down to its members. Thus there is social pressure to conform to certain tendencies, while also the interpretation of social imperatives by people and the general progress, technological etc., changes society as a whole.
