Greed

    • Greed is, like a number of other human behavioural traits, the remmenet of an evolved behaviour during an earlier time in human biological history. One can see how greed would benefit a animal trying to survive. By aquiaring a great deal of food and other resources, that animal would be more likely to survive and reproduce and pass on its genes. Greed can be called a beneficial characteristic for animals.

But what about humans? Only humanity has managed to develop a self-aware mind capable of analyzing the world in a way that is unparalled by the mind of any other animal. We seem to be an exception to many rules of natural selection and evolution. We have been able to shape our enviroment, tame nature and do whatever is needed in order to ensure that our lives are comfortable. But do we still need greed?

It seems now that greed is not at all useful. Possesing this characteristic gives none of the benefits it once did. Greed is no longer able to ensure the survival it once did. Look at the French Revolution. The Greedy nobility and royalty were eventually overthrown and a great many of them, despite the riches they possesed, were killed. Similar event have occured all theoughout history and even today.

Does greed benefit manking any longer? I think not. It detriments us. It damages our society. It prevents us from making progress, social or otherwise. It has been rendered obsolete by our intellect and I feel that it should be discarded.
